Where Do Vegans Get Their Protein?

Vegan Protein Sources

These days less people ask me about where vegans get their protein. Why? Education. I am happy to say that more and more people are getting educated on where their food comes from and why it is so incredibly important to know what is in it. I've also found that more people I speak with on the subject don't eat meat anymore or have drastically cut down on their intake. Once again this leads to them learning about other protein sources. There have been many books and documentaries on the subject of our food sources in the last 10 years and when people watch them they tend to make some changes in their eating habits. Of course this excites me as I myself will take any opportunity i can to educate and talk about nutrition.

Can a Vegan Be Unhealthy?

In my opinion that depends. I feel vegans need to be educated and make healthy choices. Just because something is vegan does not make it healthy! It is very important to speak with your doctor, work with a nutritionist or educated individual or at the very least do your homework to be sure you are meeting your body's needs. On to the topic at point. Below is a list of vegan protein sources.

  • Quinoa

  • Lentils; red, green, brown

  • Spinach and other leafy greens

  • Broccoli and so many other veggies

  • Almonds and other nuts and nut butters

  • Hemp milk, almond milk, soy milk

  • Beans; chickpeas, black beans, edamame, there are so many beans!

  • Artichokes

  • Nutritional Yeast

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Oats

  • Chia seeds

  • Seiten

  • Soy (soy milk, tofu)

So as you can see getting your protein while eating vegan meals really isn't an issue at all.

  • You do not need protein at every meal! Instead focus on getting enough protein throughout the day.

  • There are many complete protein sources when eating a plant based diet which I will get into on another post, but even if a meal doesn't have a complete protein in it, our bodies can also make complete proteins when we eat a variety of high protein foods.

  • With recipes and helpful information at your figure tips these days replacing meat in your meals has really never been easier.
