What's "The Age"? When does it tank?

I'm going to shock you now so get ready...there is no specific age when your metabolism tanks. Believe it or not your metabolism is not working against you! You can train yourself to get to amazing places at any age even into your 90's! Just listen to your body and change with it. Sure it will naturally slow as you get older into your 60's, 70's and 80's, but there is so much you can do to slow that down!

Are You Causing The Slow Down?

Much too often people use their age as an excuse for a metabolism shift. Yes, those times do often come around the ages of 40's - 60's. However, is it because you turned 45 that your metabolism changed or did you have something else going on in your life?

  • It's common for people to change jobs in their 40's

  • You may decide exercise isn't as important as it once was to you and stop doing it or pull back A LOT

  • Perhaps there is a lot going on in your life

  • A long term illness or injury may have come into your life

The point is, fitness will and should change in your life since your life itself is always shifting. Listen to your body and do what feels good. If it doesn't feel good to your body to play tennis anymore move onto something new! If you're just getting back after an illness or injury ease back into it properly with a doctors consent and slowly get back to where you can healthily be.If a healthy metabolism is important to you than you need to schedule it and make it a consistent priority just like you would with anything else that is important to you. If it becomes not as important to you  because of choice, or a job, those things can have an emotional and physical impact on your metabolism.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Your metabolism is directly related to the amount of physical activity you do on a daily basis and the amount of muscle tissue you have on your body.

Don't put it on something or someone else, take responsibility of your own metabolism. It's also important to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Are you going to look exactly like you did at 20 years of age? No, but why would you want to? Embrace your body and work with it not against it. Pay close attention to how the decisions you make affect your health and fitness. It may take a bit more work to get there as you get older but that's more reason to get started now and not put it off until next month or next year!

These days everything seems to be documented in social media, perhaps that may be a fun and motivating way to keep you going. Post pictures of your goals and achievements, struggles, join a community of people with similar interests. Or keep it more private and just share pictures with family and close friends with a photo sharing website. Bottom line is make it as fun as you can. Listen to your body and be sure to give proper time to heal when sick or injured, keep your workouts fresh and only do what makes you feel good! You can do this - but that is the point; DO IT and KEEP doing it!
